As we promised, FHRP leveraged your support in 2024 to increase programming for families and children in the Park, advocate for sound environmental practices, and highlight the untold stories of the Park through our history and heritage programs. Thanks to our supporters who contributed over 2300 volunteer hours, attended one or more of our 50+ park events, and donated financially to our organization, this year FHRP:
Remember, FHRP did all this and more with just one part-time staff member. We thank our dedicated volunteers, our committed Board Members, and our foundation partners for their support! We always welcome applications to the Board and new or returning volunteers! Contact us at [email protected] for more info!
- Increased family and children’s programming more than 150% by adding Community Art in the Park programs, expanding Kids' Bird Walks offerings, and bringing local middle school students to experience guided tours of the Heritage Trail.
- Won a competitive grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to support community-led action planning for the Lower Herring Run, which prioritizes the voices of residents, supports direct financial investment into the surrounding communities, and works toward building a safe and usable Lower Herring Run.
- Brought Jazz Jam and the Share Your Heritage Festival to the Park
- Hand-watered, pruned and mulched over 70 new and young trees to help them thrive, and planted 15 new trees. (Did you know that it takes 3-5 years of consistent support for a single urban tree to become stable enough to survive?)
- Removed over 6,000 pounds of trash and debris from the stream and surrounding park areas
- Partnered with CorpsThat! to provide environmental education and volunteer opportunities to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing... a community that is too often excluded from such outdoor events
- Provided vital therapeutic recreation opportunities to Baltimore residents seeking asylum from persecution and serious human rights violations in other countries (with our partner AWE)
- Continued important advocacy for Herring Run Stream to stop damaging stream restoration in the Western Branch of Herring Run, shrinking the project's environmental impact from over 220 tree removals to 88 (44 of which were already dead).
