Subject: Stream Restoration ER4054
Dear Honorable Mayor Scott,
As a Baltimore City resident and voter, I urge you to stop the Stream Restoration project known as ER4054- Western Branch Herring Run.
I have deep concerns that this project does more harm than good to our stream bed, urban forest and wildlife without providing meaningful mitigation of stormwater runoff.
This project will increase the amount of invasive, non-native plants and harm Baltimore City’s tree canopy. It goes against Baltimore City’s intended goal to double tree canopy by 2040, for which the city established and funds TreeBaltimore.
The costs of Project ER4054 to Baltimore and its residents greatly outweigh any potential good. There are many more effective alternatives to managing stormwater runoff, and much more responsible ways to get MS4 credits in this area, as listed plainly by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
In addition, this project negatively impacts equitable access to the implicit health benefits of forested areas. These urban forest patches are pumping oxygen into the air, lowering the heat index and benefiting everyone within the Loch Raven community. The Loch Raven community demographics show 89% African-American residents, with a median income of $22k-$48,000 per year and between 79% - 100% renter-occupied units. These are hard working residents, deserving of green space and their health being a top priority. (Baltimore City Planning Department).
Again, as a voting resident of Baltimore City, I urge you to stop this project immediately. Show that the health all Baltimore residents is important!
Sincerely,
(remember to sign your own name!)
